I have talked with a few people who have started some kind of personal tracking. Usually it is amount exercise,  food they eat or weight. Most find some kind of smartphone app to track what they want, do it for a few weeks, and then quit. Why?

The reason people I have talked to stop tracking themselves is always lack of motivation. And the reason why they don't stay motivated is that they didn't have concrete, measurable goal in the first place. For example, many people want to lose weight. But they don't have measurable goal. It is not enough just to have goal like "I want to lose some weight". You must have clear goal, like "I want to lose 5 kg of my body fat".

The reason for me for starting this blog is exercise and training. I have run a couple of marathons and competed in a couple of short distance triathlons. I got interested in how I could improve my marathon and triathlon times and in general my fitness in an optimal way.

I have two concrete goals:
  1. Run a marathon in less than 4 hours (my current best time is 4:36)
  2. Finish an olympic distance triathlon (1500 m swimming / 40 km cycling / 10 km running) in less than  2 h 30 min (my current best time is 3:04)

And I want to do this in two years, by end of 2015.

This blog is about finding the optimal training, rest and nutrition to achieve these results. I want to measure my progress and I want to measure different things that affect my progress. So I am on my way to find the best applications, methods and gadgets for tracking how I am doing. What helps me to achieve my goals, and what doesn't.
